COUNCIL CHAMBERS
Erie, Pa., August 16, 2000
Resolved, by the Council of the City of Erie,
That Gov. Thomas Ridge is respectfully requested to establish a State Commission to investigate the application of the use of our death penalty statutes in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and consider a stay of execution of all death row inmates by Executive Order until the final report is released to the general public and further order a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Office of the Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.JOURNAL 120-571-C

This resolution was passed by the City Council of Erie (the hometown of Gov. Tom Ridge) by a vote of the 6 to 1 on Wednesday evening, August 16, 2000. This effort was led in large measure by the Sisters of St. Benedect. The council chamber were packed with about 125 supporters of the resolution, many of whom testified during the public comment section of council meeting; there were no comments presented opposing the resolution. Additionally, a supporting statement from Catholic Bishop Trautman of the Diocese of Erie was read.
